5 Steps To Clear Skin In Winter

Winter can often be a challenging season for skin. In clinic we see an increase in cases of perioral dermatitis, eczema and lipid dry acne (‘Acne Tarda’). In this blog we will look at 5 easy steps to help achieve clear skin in the cooler months.


Indoor heating, dry winds and a cooler climate have a big impact on Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL). TEWL has a cascade effect and is often the leading element of skin dysfunction.

We see a disruption to cellular communication and the skin will struggle to regulate oil (sebum) production to assist keeping the skin lubricated.



  • Avoid long, hot showers (use tepid water on your face)
  • When having a bath, add a lipid rich product (we love Dermaviduals tenfione semisomal bath)
  • Drink at least 2 litres of filtered water (can be hot!) and herbal teas
  • Avoid skin care with emulsifiers
  • Schedule regular facials with enzyme exfoliation
  • Those with eczema and dermatitis can even try ‘water-free cleansing’ (it’s a thing!)

As we are snuggled up in front of the telly, the frequent sweating of the summer months can be a distant memory. Sweating is vital for healthy, clear skin and helps to detoxify and support our protective acid mantle.


  • Wear extra clothing when exercising (I do this when I run!)
  • Have a regular far-infrared sauna (great detox and skin benefits)

  • Get some regular lymphatic drainage massages to assist your body clear waste
  • Eat lots of green veggies, ginger and sea vegetables to assist lymphatic health


Your skin care ingredients should be reviewed by a professional each season, but particularly in winter. It’s a bit like asking you to eat salad all winter, or to wear your bikini to the snow – not too appealing. The same goes for skin, the requirements are completely different and the skin needs a lot more nurturing and protection from the elements.

  • Don’t be afraid of more nourishing ingredients…the right products will not congest or cause breakouts
  • Use pure hyaluronic acid as a primer underneath makeup (ah-ma-zing!)
  • Continue to use sunscreen on your face as UVA is still present


For robust, healthy skin we need a strong cell membrane.  The cell membrane is a thin, flexible barrier, which covers the cell. It helps keep all the yummy, juicy water INSIDE the cell. Essential fats in our diet and skin care are responsible for membrane health (they are called essential for a reason!). In winter, many of us eat less omega-3 rich fish products, and more omega-6 (inflammatory) foods.


  • Eat lots of oily (preferably wild-caught) fish – check ‘Australia’s Sustainable Seafood Guide’ app
  • Reduce your intake of Omega-6 vegetable oils (refined foods) and meat and dairy that is grain fed
  • If you have a skin condition, supplementation with a sustainably sourced, concentrate fish oil is essential
  • Look for skin care ranges that include phosphatidylcholine
  • eliminate skin care containing emulsifiers that will drag fats out of the tissue
